We drove about 30 minutes outside of Cheyenne to a place called Curt Gowdy State Park. This is a popular campground in the area surrounding a scenic lake. What seemed to be a short drive around the lake, we recognized all the outdoor adventures that it offers. I did some research and saw that this place offered some local trails for biking. So why not check it out.
Funny thing upon arriving, I realized about 10 years ago, Blake and I actually camped here. Mind you, biking wasn’t really in our wheel house. Camping and boating was. So we had taking a few trips with our boat to some random of places. We actually had come over to this place to camp with my dad years ago and enjoy the jet skis he had owned at the time. My memory of taking a fall off the jet ski with Blake was a vivid memory of this place. It is funny, we’ve made it back here unintentionally. How we had been to this place and enjoyed the lake and its beauty then, not recognizing any other outdoor fun it offered!
There is no better way to enjoy nature other than to sweep into a dense forest, pedaling over sunlit meadows, and enjoy the unique beauty that the rolling hills of Wyoming offered. We were able to traverse around the whole lake, going in and out of plain view site of the lake and its’ dam that shadowed in the back woods. We were able to travel the whole area in a short couple hours and have the time of our life! The boys did fantastic rolling through the forests and though some of the uphill climbs were a tad intense, the boys powered through it like champs! A little over 3 1/2 miles and a little over 197 ft of climbing we wrapped up our Gowdy Trails afternoon. The boys get a kick out of this stuff. On any of the uphill climbs, you’ll hear Rhett chanting, “what goes up, must come down!” It’s his way to boost his motivation and amp his way up a challenging hill. He can often times get in his head and be negative. However, biking has allowed us to easily provide lessons of what hard work is and what positive things can come from it. Keeping stuff like that simple and relatively to the point of analogies they can relate to, is easy for our kids to comprehend. Little life quotes they can refer to as they work through their challenges and obstacles.
Cheyenne has been a completely different experience this go around. Thanks to having the bikes. I know I have said it, and I’ll say it again. Biking around and intentionally searching for biking trails truly allows you to really explore more! We’ve been to Cheyenne a lot! We have never experienced Cheyenne like this before! It’s definitely one for the books. We have a new taste of new found love for this place and I guarantee our bikes will be traveling with us anytime we head in this direction. The amount of trails in this area, paved and unpaved is amazing! An easy trail with some challenges to make a trip worth taking. It is an unlimited bike show up here and we are stunned and impressed! The kids had a blast and that itself is a total win!
